A swimming pool is a great way to spend time with family and friends throughout the hot summer months; but what comes with a pool is maintenance. Maintaining a pool can be a tough task but it needs to be done if you want the pool to have crystal clear water! Some common steps to follow are as follows: maintaining chemical balance, administer shock and algaecide, skimming the pool, and backwashing.
Maintain chemical balance. Maintaining your chemical levels in your pool is the most important part to keeping your water crystal clear. Chlorine and pH work together to fight off the bacteria and algae that has lingered around the pool’s water. The pH tells you whether the pool is acidic or alkaline and helps with how effective the chlorine will be. It is recommended the pH level of your pool should read between 7.2 and 7.6. If your pH is a little too high, you may need to add a little bit of acid to the water to get your pH level back to normal.
Shock and Algaecide. So you’ve maintained good pH levels and your pool is looking great. Just because you maintain good levels, doesn’t mean that there isn’t bacteria and little bit of algae still lingering. Shock the pool or even super-chlorinate your pool to kill any of that excess bacteria of algae that may be roaming around in the pool. Algaecide is designed to kill algae, which can grow around the walls of your pool. Did you know algae is the most common cause of turning a pool green?
Skimming the pool. Skimming is something that should be done on a weekly basis, especially during the summer months and around fall. The skimmer that’s in the pool is designed to catch most of the debris, however some of debris may be too large and will need to be removed manually. Manually skim the pool to pick up any debris or bus that are floating on top of the water’s surface. It is also important to manually skim your pool so the basket does not clog with dirt, leaves, bugs and other debris.
Backwash. Backwashing your filter also plays a key role in keeping the water sparkling clean. Your filter will remove the dirt and microscopic debris that cannot be picked up while manually skimming. Backwashing forces the water to go the opposite direction to clean out the filter. If your water has started to look a little cloudy, try backwashing your filter.
